Lead<\/span>-acid batteries are used in motorized vehicles, for storage of energy generated <\/span>by <\/span>solar panels <\/span>and wind turbines, and for back<\/span>-up power supplies. <\/span><\/p>\n The growing <\/span>use of renewable energy sources and the concomitant need for storage batteries, as <\/span>well as the increasing demand for motor vehicles as countries undergo economic <\/span>development, mean that the demand for lead<\/span>-acid batteries is continuing to <\/span>increase. <\/span><\/p>\n Approximately 85% of th<\/span>e total global consumption of lead is for the <\/span>production of these batteries, and <\/span>over half <\/span>of this demand is met through recycling<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n Lead<\/span>, as fumes, particles and dust, <\/span>can be released at all stages of the battery <\/span>recycling process, from draining and d<\/span>ismantling the batteries, to smelting and <\/span>refining the lead. <\/span>Environmental contamination from recycling can be extensive and <\/span>can cause significant exposure to workers and to surrounding communities.
